PopImpressKA Journal: JOSE LUIS AS MICHAEL JACKSON

PopImpressKA Journal: JOSE LUIS AS MICHAEL JACKSON

by Olga Papkovitch

October 14, 2018

Having travelled the world dancing to the beat of Iris Chacon and many other talented artists, Jose Luis finally dug his roots into the NYC scene in the 80’s. Jose instinctively absorbed all the energy and excitement of the stage and the audience, to create one of his most important artistic personae.

In his hometown of Puerto Rico, a chance arose to present to the audience an impersonation of Michael Jackson in a variety show. The crowd went wild for his performance and at first it scared this professionally inclined dancer. He decided to accept and develop the MJ persona even more and soon he was being hired to perform all over Puerto Rico.  Jose entered and started winning talent competitions which led to him making important connections within the entertainment industry. With the help of a talent agency, he formed a group called Jose Luis in a Tribute to Michael Jackson. Jose went on a worldwide tour with his newly formed group, even being the first US performance group to be allowed to perform in China 1994.

There are many accomplishments under Jose’s humble belt and he continues to perform to the delight of new and seasoned fans of Michael Jackson. A new exhibition called Michael Jackson: On the Wall just opened in London, and has been making headlines around the world. Directly influenced by the legendary Michael Jackson, works by over 48 contemporary artists from all over the world are featured in this show.

A portrait of Jose Luis as Michael Jackson welcomes visitors on the front of London’s National Portrait Gallery, a portrait done by none other than David LaChapelle.
