PopImpressKA Journal: amfAR, ending the global AIDS epidemic through innovative research.

Founded in 1985, amfAR is dedicated to ending the global AIDS epidemic through innovative research

With the freedom and flexibility to respond quickly to emerging areas of scientific promise, amfAR plays a catalytic role in accelerating the pace of HIV/AIDS research and achieving real breakthroughs. Since 1985, amfAR has invested $480 million in its programs and has awarded more than 3,300 grants to research teams worldwide. Through its $100 million Countdown to a Cure for AIDS initiative, amfAR aims to develop the scientific basis for a cure by 2020.

The Inspiration Gala Los Angeles

Designer Tom Ford was honored for his contributions to the fight against AIDS at the fifth annual Inspiration Gala Los Angeles, hosted by Gwyneth Paltrow. Rihanna presented the Award of Inspiration on amfAR’s behalf. The black-tie event raised more than $3 million for amfAR and featured a surprise performance by Coldplay’s Chris Martin and Jonny Buckland. R&B legend Diana Ross closed the night with an electrifying medley of her top hits. Miley Cyrus, Rihanna, Justin Timberlake and other celebrities were among those bidding generously in the live auction, conducted by amfAR Global Fundraising Chairman Sharon Stone. In another philanthropic highlight of the evening, amfAR Trustee David Bohnett made a $1 million gift to advance the Foundation’s “Countdown to a Cure for AIDS” initiative. To date, the Inspiration series has raised nearly $20 million for amfAR.
