Sponsor: Phillip Delacruz is the Chief Executive Officer of DAMA Tequila. Phillip brings over thirty years of breakthrough branding, highly-original design, and inspiring leadership—all in the service of launching and building successful brands. Phillip grew up in San Francisco where his natural artistic abilities led him to pursue a career in design. At the age of seventeen, he got his first art job—in the design department of the local CBS television affiliate. Phillip also worked at a printing company and attended the Academy of Art in San Francisco, where his primary studies were advertising, marketing, graphic design, and creative thinking. He then utilized his work experience, training, and education to found his own firm, GraphX Print and Design, where he oversaw a creative team of eight and garnered clients such as Sony Music, Ben & Jerry’s, the 2000 Winter Olympics Planning Committee, Hard Rock Cafe, US Department of the Surgeon General, Bank of America, Esprit Apparel, Macy’s, MTV Networks, and a variety of small to mid- sized companies. Phillip’s innovations at GraphX included his Cartoon Your Image division (profiled by CNN), which created mascots for companies and their products, such as Mabel the Cow for Ben & Jerry’s. After relocating to the San Diego area, Phillip continued his design and branding work and also created a Latina-based apparel line, LOCA, which he took from original idea phase to national distribution. In March of 2006, Phillip accepted the position of Partner, Chief Brand Designer, and Marketing Director of Mar Mar Importing, Inc., producer of Don Jose Lopez Portillo Tequila—the namesake brand of the ex-President of Mexico. Phillip initiated and executed a re-branding to JLP Tequila and created the new design and look & feel for the brand, including logos, color palettes, tag lines, website design, packaging, collateral, point of sales, and all art and photography direction. Phillip also initiated a far-reaching product placement campaign, which has brought him numerous high-level contacts in the entertainment industry. Phillip’s efforts resulted in JLP Tequila being distributed in 5 major U.S. chains, Australia, and a growing list of retail customers. Phillip’s experience at Mar Mar provided the perfect foundation for the creation of his new luxury brand and firm, DAMA Tequila. DAMA is the first tequila for women by women, and combines an unforgettable taste with unparalleled quality in an exquisitely sophisticated bottle. Phillip counts his community activities as proud achievements, and always incorporates a charity component to his work. He has volunteered at both the San Diego Latino Film Festival and the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival (LALIFF), and has taught art classes at local schools and community centers. DAMA Tequila will earmark a percentage of revenue to supporting women issues in the US and abroad, and will create an annual “DAMA Dominance Awards” to acknowledge distinguished women making an impact in society. For fun and profit, Phillip has been awarded first prize in numerous street art contests and been commissioned for sidewalk art projects by companies such as Ford Motor Corp.
