About the artist

Margrit Schuerpf Newman was born in 1939 in Kreuzlingen, Switzerland. Originally a painter, Margrit Newman studied art in Basel, Switzerland, where she was born. Margrit’s works are a juxtaposition of nature and abstract forms. She uses photography as another means of expression. What has fascinated Margrit Newman since she began her career as an artist is the limit we draw between reality and abstraction. To her, this line is very thin, almost non-existent. Margrit believes that in order to better perceive reality, we need to confront it with some kind of abstraction. She is constantly exploring different ways to make us aware of this intricate duality. In her early work, Margrit appropriated reality and incorporated it into her works. For example, she took pieces of nature - lichen, moss, shells, insects, and other strands to create collages. By framing them into her “box” series, Margrit gave them all the importance they deserve. In later works, she took those natural elements out of the boundaries of the box and let them develop an abstract life of their own on the canvas.

Margrit soon had an urge to go further, deeper. She switched from the three-dimensional box format to photographs on canvas, which allowed her to play more literally with the boundary between reality--as represented by the photo and abstraction, as she sought to depict it on the canvas that surrounds the photo. Her favorite subjects: walls, doors, clouds, roofs- represent themes of boundaries and passage.

Margrit Newman began writing poetry while living in New York. Her poetry reflects impressions of everyday life and describes nature in a suggestive way. Margrit’s poems have appeared in publications in France and America, where she currently lives. Margrit’s paintings have been shown in France, Switzerland, London, and New York. She hopes to continue exploring different styles in painting and writing.
