EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH DR. JESSICA FIGUEROA:
#1
PopImpressKA Journal: What is your background?
Dr. Jessica Figueroa: I was born in El Salvador and moved to Miami when I was eight. I am the oldest of four. I graduated from University of Florida BA Science and Nutrition. Moved to New York to attend NYU Dental School. After graduation I did a hospital residency and started private office as well as dental teacher in my residency program. I taught for 10 years and the last four I became a General Residency Program Director. Two years ago I opened up the Rego Park Dental Spa office which is 3,000 square feet and decided it was time to leave the hospital career.
#2
PJ: What are the most important values your family gave you while growing up?
DJF: My mother made sure we understood that if you work hard and have a career you love you can accomplish anything you set your mind to.
#3
PJ: How did you decide to become a dentist?
DJF: When I was in high school I attended a specialized high school for students interested in the medicine field. I took a dental assisting course and had an amazing teacher who was a hygienist. I loved the classes so much because it incorporated creativity, arts and manual abilities to complete the job. I decided to become a dentist at that point.
#4
PJ: What are the services your dental clinic provides?
DJF: Maintaining good oral health is our priority. However; Veneers, Invisalign, teeth-whitening and implants are high demand from our fashion patients. After attending NYFW this year I understood even more how crucial the cosmetic dentistry is to the industry. With high definition cameras where all is captured it is vital to be as perfect as possible.
#5
PJ: How is your clinic different from others?
DJF: Our clinic at Presidental Care makes sure our patients are treated as if they were our family. We make sure they know how important they are and dedicate our attention to the individual from the moment they walk in the door to the time they head home. Our state of the art office allows us to provide good, efficient, painless dental care.
#6
PJ: What do you think is the most important quality s dentist should have?
DJF: The most important quality a dentist should have is compassion. More than 70% of patients in the dental chair are not happy to be there due to past bad experiences, fear and anxiety of what comes next. Compassion allows us to have the patience needed to provide a pleasant experience where the patient can complete all the treatment he or she needs. Being well rounded is also important to be able to understand the different kind of people that come into the office. In the Garment district we get Models, broadway actors, international hotel guests for emergencies and high profile patients that want to be taken care of.
#7
PJ: What is your favorite book? Film? Cuisine types? Time of the year? Holiday?
DJF: My favorite book is Alice in Wonderland. It lets us into a fantasy world where anything is possible. My favorite time of the year is the summer. Being outdoors for activities and sports is important to me. I love going to the beach and spending time on the water. Christmas is my favorite holiday because it is the time of the year where everyone makes an extra effort to be kind with each other. Families get together and make time to share their lives.
#8
PJ; your favorite place to travel?
DJF: My favorite place to travel is Mexico. I love the beaches, food and hospitality. There are so many natural gems every destination that you go. Anytime you go on vacation to a water side destination whether it is a bay, river or ocean, there is a peaceful encounter where you can recharge energy and start your daily routine fresh. In Mexico you can have the sea, dessert, snow, mountains, pyramids, the options are endless.
#9
PJ: What doctors are the biggest inspiration in your profession?
DJF: I have met doctors that have dedicated their careers to teaching in dentistry. I have a lot of admiration for that because I know it is very hard work that monetarily isn’t compensated as it deserves. The enthusiasm and passion for our career is what drives them to continue helping young inexperienced doctors to learn. Due to those kind of doctors I chose a career in Hospital Residency teaching to give back as I had been given at the start of my career.
#10
PJ: How is the modern dentistry profession influences the todays dentist health of the patients compare to a decade ago? What are the special services that your clinic provide for their patients?
DJF: We can do same day crowns with our Cerec System. Emergency visits that require multiple appointments can be done in one sitting. Our dental hygienists are meticulous and caring making the dental experience a good one to return to. We value the time of our patients and make their visits as efficient as possible. Our equipment is state of the art, digital charts and xrays. Our chairs massage your back lightly while you are having work done. We have nitrous gas (laughing gas) to relax anxious patients. Patients have healthier teeth because dentistry has become less painful.
#11
PJ: What are your three wishes?
DJF: Three wishes that I consider important to me: 1. That people have more tolerance for each other’s views and differences. We are so quick to judge at times that we don’t step back and step into the other person’s shoes. 2. Oral healthcare gets neglected all the time and often thought of as “It’s just a cleaning,” when the procedures being done in someone’s mouth affects so much more. The relationship between diabetes, high blood pressure and oral health is very often overlooked because we are not informed or educated in this area. I wish for people to understand and appreciate the importance of teeth! 3. I believe that everyone has a great potential to reach their journey in life. My wish is that everyone takes the opportunity life gives you to reach goals and have no regrets

How to Keep Your Beautiful Smile this Holiday Season
- Timing matters. Sipping your favorite sugary beverage, even your morning coffee with an extra sugar, can be far more harmful than all in one sitting. By sipping, bacteria can thrive as it has plenty of time to eat up that sugar and develop cavities.
- Moderating that dessert will not only help your waistline, but also your teeth. When you do decide to indulge, make sure to eat shortly after mealtime. You will still be full from that healthy main course, reducing the amount of dessert you will be tempted to have and limiting the time your teeth are exposed to cavity causing sugars.
- Not all textures are created the same. When it comes to choosing your healthy snack to keep your energy at its peak all day, remember sticky foods tend to stay in teeth longer. This means that dried mango or raisins may not be as healthy as you once thought. And watch out for those hard nuts, they have been known to crack and chip teeth.
- Sneaky cavity culprits can be those starchy indulgences such as chips, breads and potatoes. They may not seem to be sugary, but that starch breaks down and feeds that bacteria just like a bowl of ice cream.
- ‘Tis the season for holiday parties and Christmas cocktails. If you do choose to drink this holiday season, be aware of those sweet twists to your egg nog and glogg. Not only do they often have sugar, but can dry your mouth out depriving your smile of your natural antibacterial…saliva.
So stay healthy this holiday season with plenty of lean proteins, whole grains and delicious veggies. Your whole body and smile will thank you for it!
-American Dental Association has approved these suggestions.
